My Bass Philosophy
"For those of us who understand that we don't just play bass, but that being a bassist is a calling, a state of mind,
even a lifestyle. It is in our soul and part of what makes us who we are - there is a connection between our hands,
our souls, and our basses. Just the feel of a bass resonating against our body, even unplugged, is something we
understand to be bigger than our concious mind and language can describe. We bassists understand that it can't
just sound good, it has to "feel" good too! "
"Most other musicians don't live in the world where rhythm and melody must meet to make a song, to make music
that connects with that primitive, reptile portion of our brain that makes us feel the need to move our bodies,
that touches our hearts, our souls, and pulls on our emotions and memories. That is what we bassists do. Our
ability to lay down a groove, to lock in with the drummer to drive the whole band and thereby the listener,
the connection and experience that is music."

13 May 2008 - WAY too long since my last update!...ARGH!
Whew! So many things going on! After a long time of not really working on it much, my solo album "Basket Case" is coming
along quite nicely. Dino Cuneo and Billy Austin have contributed some fantastic drum and guitar parts. Once all the tracking is done I'm planning
on doing the final mixing here at Sound Logic Studios. I haven't made a decision yet on a studio for mastering. I've started working on the artwork,
design and layout for the album as well so that should all be ready before the final mixing and mastering are done. The last thing then will be
figuring out how to do live shows to support the CD release!
Now that I have finished a complete redesign and overhaul of my GW Basses website, I am working on a complete redesign and rearchitecture of this site for me
as a bass player. Keep checking back for the new design rollout!
I am filling in for a local Indianapolis based band "The Smileys" once or twice a month when their regular bassist can't make a show. They are a TON of fun,
they do a TON of cool songs... everything from Led Zepplin to Madonna and Janet Jackson.. no kidding! Check the schedule on my myspace/basskahuna
MySpace page for schedule info and updates with "The Smileys". I am looking to join or put together another band as well... preferable something that will
push, pull, and challenge me in a new direction. As of today (13 May 2008) I've been to two jam sessions with a potential new band here that would be a 4 or possibly 5 piece
band doing mostly jazz-fusion-funk instrumental stuff, which would be right up my alley. Possibly adding some vocals down the road if needed. The project shows a TON of
promise, and would involve a local guitar player that I HIGHLY respect and admire, just not sure if it is going to pull together into a full band. Two of the other players
have been kinda trying to put it together for a long time now and I sense a good bit of reluctance to commit to it as they have been disappointed by other guitars and bass
players before. Everyone has thrown out some GREAT ideas... no lack of ideas for songs here, just need to see if we can pull it together into something cohesive with some
direction in the next few weeks. Stay tuned on that front. I continue to keep my eyes open for any other musical situations that interest me.
And.. as I have mentioned above, I do have a MySpace page. It is at www.myspace.com/basskahuna. Stop by, listen
to a song sample or two, drop me a note, check the schedule for any shows I have coming up, etc.
Anyway, tons more going on... my rig has changed about 20 times since the last pic and update.. and I have quite a few new very cool basses, and have sold
one or two others so look for an update in my equipment area soon. Also TONS of pics from my almost two years touring around the midwest with Rockerbox, so my gallery
page needs to be udated desperately as well! Heck, I still have pics from some gigs in Colorado that need to be put up there!
What am I listening to currently? John Jorgensen Gypsy Jazz, Classical Music, and Primus!
