1975 - 1978: My first real band, Sapphire.

<-- page 1 -- page 2 -- page 3 -->

We were a group of guys from Hamburg High School in Hamburg (Buffalo) N.Y. I was still playing guitar at this point, and the thought of playing bass never even entered my mind.

Ya know, I still gotta say that we were better than your average high school band. Heck, for those of us who remember, we did a KICK-ASS cover of the Tubes "White Punks on Dope", including the middle instrumental section with the funky time signature. It had this real high vocal part that I sang in falsetto. I don't think I have ever been able to hit those high notes since.

It is probably worth noting here that I am confident that none of the guys who were in the band with me remember these pictures and that I kept them all these years, much less published them on the internet!

Here is a picture of us "backstage" at a gig at our own high school during our senior year.... I'm the 3rd turdball from the right with the red silk scarf (sexy, ain't it!...)

Ah yes, my first "real" guitar. A 1976 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Gold Top, yeah... the one with the skinny pickups. Wish I had that sucker today....

##
We used to practice at the Hamburg Youth Center. This is
one of our many attempts at "promo pictures" that
we took there one night. I'm the last guy on the right
in the back row. Whadda face!

##
More attempts at promo pictures. Oh yeah, I should name the other victims here. Okay, from the left is Bill "Drifter" Loefke, Guy Kirshoff, Dennis "Puberty" Hertz (GAWD he HATED that nickname!...), Steve "Boner Nose" Reusch, Scott Anderson (he left the band shortly after these pics were taken...), then me.
